Disability activist and comedian Stella J. Young passed away unexpectedly last weekend of an aneurysm at just 32. Young will be remembered as a ferocious, biting, fantastic comedian who constantly challenged notions of disability and the “tactfully challenged,” as well as a strong disability and women’s rights advocate; her death represents a tremendous blow to the disability culture and disability culture. Along with activists like Paul K. Longmore and Laura Hershey, Young’s voice contributed substantially to changes in disability policy and the social status of disability as she fought to combat ableism on an institutional and individual level.
