PRESENTATION OVERVIEW:

ADA compliance in the higher education arena can be a complicated endeavor:  Projects of multiple ages and changing uses, lengthy renovation history, overlapping requirements, complex funding mechanisms, and a continuing interface with a changing public combine to create a challenging environment in which to comply with accessibility requirements.

Our recent series of projects with a number of public and private institutions have highlighted useful design strategies and construction oversight techniques that have resulted in better compliance and significant savings, limiting tear-out and rework - all to the benefit of the design teams, contractors, districts and their effective stewardship of available funding.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

Participants will be able to:

1. learn some of the most significant design and construction issues of non-compliance;
2. explain some key design methods to accommodate construction tolerances;
3. provide recommendations for ongoing inspections and verification during construction;
4. discuss strategies for prioritizing projects when considering which issues to address.

COST:

This Course is currently intended to meet the requirements for 2 hours of Continuing Education Credits for DSA CASp Certification Renewal, International Code Council (ICC), and LU Continuing Education Credits for the American Institute of Architect (AIA).

Mark J. Hulme, AIA, CASp, LEED AP BD+C

Mark Hulme, Assistant Vice President in the Pasadena office, performs architectural consulting, sustainability reviews, property condition assessments, owner’s representation-related services and disabled accessibility reviews. For over two decades, he has been involved in diverse construction and architectural projects, including retail properties, offices and interiors, as well as community college and K-12 educational facilities. As a Certified Access Specialist (CASp), Mark has conducted CASp and other disabled accessibility reviews of office, shopping center, hotel and multifamily properties.

Prior to joining Marx|Okubo, he served as a project architect for a Los Angeles-based architectural firm, where he worked on construction document preparation, project management, specifications writing, governmental plan processing and construction administration.
