Society for the Blind: More than What You See.

This seminar will provide an overview of causes and conditions that lead to vision loss and blindness, the services offered at the Society, and integrating people who are blind or have low vision into our everyday lives. Attendees will learn:

1. The 4 leading causes of blindness and how it impacts what you see

2. How to Interact with a Person Who is Blind or Low Vision

3. Living with Blindness or Low Vision: Non-visual skills, techniques and technology

4. What makes an environment helpful or challenging for someone with vision loss

Speaker: Liz Culp is the Resource Development Director of Society for the Blind. Before joining Society for the Blind in 2011, Liz spent over 20 years in the business development and marketing arena. Liz owned an independent marketing and communications firm for nearly five of those years serving the credit union industry, corporate clients and the nonprofit sector with their marketing, communications and business development needs. ​Click here to read Liz's full bio.

Speaker: Shane Snyder is the Director of Programs of Society for the Blind. Shane oversees the educational programs at the Society. He is responsible for curriculum development, instructor certifications and professional development and he coordinates enrollment of new students with the Department of Rehabilitation.  His association with Society for the Blind began in 2005 as a client seeking vocational rehabilitation services.  In March, 2010, he returned to Society for the Blind as a client and began volunteering for the agency.Click here to read Shane’s full bio.

CORADA by Evan Terry Associates

Evan Terry Associates created the Comprehensive Online Resource for the Americans with Disabilities Act, or CORADA (www.corada.com), for the purpose of helping people to identify, to understand, and to meet their obligations under the ADA and other access requirements.  Navigating through necessarily complicated requirements, searching through hundreds of important technical assistance documents, and attempting to understand governmental mandates with their own special language often leaves ADA coordinators, facility managers, contractors, architects and other design professionals, as well as casual users overwhelmed and unsure where to find what they need to know and how to apply the information they do find.  Corada offers a massive online database that connects ADA requirements and official technical assistance materials developed by the Department of Justice and the Department of Transportation, and the Access Board, to other relevant information such as products, how-to videos, expert opinions, design ideas, possible solutions, training opportunities, and upcoming events. Corada also hosts “Voices,” an interactive place for occasional and regular users to discuss, share, collaborate and learn about accessibility. With peer support and targeted data for each section of the ADA Standards and regulations, it is our hope that Corada will become your go to resource to gain a better understanding of what is required; and then to successfully modify, design and construct facilities, and operate programs and policies that are inclusive of all people as required by law.

Kaylan Dunlap, from Evan Terry Associates, CORADA and board member of CASI, will join us in during the general meeting to demonstrate how CORADA can be useful to you and your work as a CASp.
